'Now, as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."

And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying,
"Drink of it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many."'
(See Matt.26:26-29; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20)

The New Covenant

Communion = "intimate union with"

'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.'
(See St Paul I Cor. 11:23-25)

The covenant = the agreement between God and his people :
firstly with Noah (Genesis 9:8-17), then with Abraham (Genesis 17:1-8)
but usually understood as in the time of Moses (Exodus 24:4-8)

the children drawn by themselves

Before First Communion

The church is often decorated with display boards at the back of church and a page written by each child about himself or herself, their hobbies, their brothers and sisters, their pets, their favourite activities and a recent photograph, which is displayed on the pillars in the church. They write about how much they are looking forward to their first Communion and what it means to them.

'"I am the bread of life," Jesus told them. "He who comes to me will never be hungry;
he who believes in me will never be thirsty...."' (John 6:35)

Some recent Communions .... a millenium album ... 2001-20013

"I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. But the bread that comes down from heaven is of such a kind that whoever eats of it will not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live for ever. The bread that I will give him is my flesh, which I give so that the world may live." (John 6: 47-51)

2002
"....I am telling you the truth: if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life within you."
"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him to life on the last day.
For my flesh is the real food, my blood is the real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him." (John 6:52-56)

"The living Father sent me and because of himI live also. In the same way whoever eats me will live because of me.
This then is the bread that came down from heaven. The one who eats this will live for ever." (John 6:57-58)

Note - the slave who performed a menial task like washing the feet of travellers was of the lowest rank.

'After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on and returned to his place at the table. "Do you understand what I have just done to you?" he asked. "You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is right that you do so, because that is what I am. I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You then should wash one another's feet. I have set an example for you, so that you will do what I have just done for you." (John 13:12-15)
